Carsten Haitzler 29864666c9 that's it - remove autom4te.cache dirs again... - keep having to many 
problems about it storing invalid config when the same build trees are
shared between multiple architectures and machines. :( better we
build right than build fast.

Sebastian Dransfeld bb691aab87 Create macros for converters. 
AC_CHECK_HEADER -> AC_CHECK_HEADERS when there are several headers to check
Use PKG_CHECK_EXISTS macro.
Add AC_HELP_STRING to AC_ARG_ENABLE, and fix some default enable/disable.

rbdpngn 6cfbfd8f6b It seems libtool on certain platforms (or possibly certain versions) no longer 
support the --version arg to libtool. Using libtoolize instead solves the
problem.
