When running the screen settings in Enlightenment and asking it to disable the laptop's internal screen while using the HDMI connection only, it turns off laptop screen fine but nothing appears on external at all apart from mouse cursor, not even TTY sessions.

did you turn on the external hdmi? have you looked at ~/.e-log.log to see what e sees in screens? logs with RRR: there are from the randr code.
